A contractor quoting a central AC install in Juneau County starts with the house, the ductwork, and the local load profile, not with weather. 88 severe weather events were recorded in Juneau County, Wisconsin between 2015 and 2024. At roughly that pace, severe weather is an intermittent presence, not a standing condition that grinds equipment down season after season. A system failing here has almost certainly been undone by age or a poor original install. Sizing and installation quality are the local variables that decide how long a system lasts, and a contractor who skips that assessment will mismatch the equipment to the house regardless of what the sky does.

Unfinished basement or crawl space with exposed wooden floor joists, insulated flexible and metal ductwork, a concrete block wall, a coiled black corrugated pipe, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Ductwork laid out for a furnace and a heating season does not automatically serve a central AC system well. Return-air placement, trunk sizing, and branch runs were designed around heat delivery, and a new cooling system draws on all three in ways the original layout did not anticipate. Half the homes in Juneau County, Wisconsin were built in 1981 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor installing central AC in a house of this vintage has to assess what is already in the walls and crawlspaces before the equipment selection means much, because a unit matched to the square footage can still underperform if the duct system cannot move conditioned air where it needs to go.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines, in gray and white tones on a white background.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad or mounting brackets outside the house, and it holds the compressor and the condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or attic, and it is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a Central AC installation puts in place.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the outdoor and indoor sides through a small penetration in the wall or rim joist. The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the living space and tells the system when to run.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what fits and where in your specific home.
