Sizing a central AC system in Portage County starts with what the climate actually asks of the equipment, and that answer sits closer to the middle than to either extreme. 98 severe weather events were recorded in Portage County, Wisconsin between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a real part of operating life here, not a rare event, but it is not so relentless that it overrides everything else a contractor has to weigh. Duct layout, insulation, and the load characteristics of the house all stay on the table. The install has to be built for a county where the weather pushes back, and the contractor's sizing work reflects that.

Basement or crawl space with concrete block walls and a bare wood joist ceiling, where insulated metal ductwork runs overhead, and a coiled flexible duct and two cardboard boxes sit on the concrete floor.

Ductwork sized and routed for a furnace carries different air volumes than a central AC system wants, and in Portage County a large share of the housing was designed before residential cooling became standard. Half the homes in Portage County, Wisconsin were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor installing central AC in stock like this has to assess whether the existing duct layout will distribute conditioned air evenly, because returns that were adequate for heat often leave cooling stranded in the wrong rooms. The electrical service is a separate question: older panels get checked against what a new condensing unit will actually draw. The equipment selection happens after those findings.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house interior showing a furnace with ductwork, interior rooms with furniture, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet and is the indoor half of the system. Together, these two units are what a homeowner is buying.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting them through a small penetration in the wall. A thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the living space and tells the system when to run. Each of these pieces is part of what a contractor accounts for when planning the installation.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines what that looks like in this particular house.

Severe Weather Events in Portage County

Portage County weather puts real stress on cooling equipment, and that stress shapes what a proper installation here needs to handle. Sizing and setup that ignores local conditions leaves a system working against the climate instead of with it.
