Sizing central AC in Walworth County starts with what the equipment will actually be asked to carry. 151 severe weather events were recorded in Walworth County, Wisconsin between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is part of the normal operating environment, and a contractor who ignores it will undersize the system for the load it will face across its working life. Duct layout, equipment capacity, and refrigerant line placement all get priced and planned around a climate that pushes the system regularly, not one that gives it a long rest between hard runs.

Ductwork sized and routed for older heating equipment is what a contractor runs into in a substantial share of Walworth County homes. Half the homes in Walworth County, Wisconsin were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history matters at the point of installation because ducts laid out for a different era of equipment may not move air in the pattern a central AC system needs, and the electrical service may not carry the load a new unit draws. The contractor scopes the existing duct runs before any equipment decision is final.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, attic ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits in a utility space, basement, or closet and is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a central AC installation puts in place.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the outdoor and indoor sides through a small penetration in the wall or rim joist. A thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. The condensate drain line runs from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows the typical layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each one is positioned and routed in your specific home.
