Before a contractor can tell you what failed and what it costs to fix, they have to work out what the system has actually been running against. 82 severe weather events were recorded in Kenosha County, Wisconsin between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, every central AC unit in the county has been cycling through conditions that stress capacitors, strain compressor windings, and push refrigerant circuits harder than a mild season would. A part that looks like it simply wore out may have worn out faster because of that load. The contractor's job on a repair call here is to find which components absorbed the most stress and whether replacing them closes the problem or only the most visible piece of it.

Unfinished basement or crawl space with exposed wooden floor joists, insulated flexible and metal ductwork, a concrete block wall, a coiled black corrugated pipe, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Ductwork and electrical in a house this old have usually been worked over more than once, but on a repair call they are rarely what stops the job. Half the homes in Kenosha County, Wisconsin were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Equipment installed into stock like this is already a generation removed from what the house was built around, and when a compressor or control board comes out, the question a contractor faces is whether a replacement part is still manufactured for that model. When it is not, the repair scope changes before any other variable does.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms, ductwork and an air handler in the attic space, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually against a foundation wall, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. These are the parts that do the hardest work, and when the system runs but blows warm air, or shuts off before the house cools, a contractor starts here. A failed compressor or a dirty, damaged condenser coil is often what the problem comes down to.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower fan. The evaporator coil sits in the airstream and is where refrigerant does its work on the indoor air. The blower pushes that air through the house, and the expansion valve and refrigerant lines connect the two units. A problem with airflow, with ice forming on the coil, or with refrigerant pressure points a contractor toward this side of the system.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to this particular house.
