Sizing a central AC system in Winnebago County means accounting for what the climate actually asks of equipment here, and the local weather record is a real input rather than a formality. 96 severe weather events were recorded in Winnebago County, Wisconsin between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a recurring factor in how hard a system runs, but not so relentless that it overrides everything else a contractor has to measure. Duct layout, insulation, and the load profile of the house all shape what size unit a contractor specifies. The weather sets the floor; the building determines the rest.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls and bare concrete floor, insulated flexible and sheet-metal ductwork running along exposed wood floor joists, two cardboard boxes and a coiled gray hose on the floor.

Ductwork laid in for a furnace and nothing else was sized, routed, and sealed for one job. Half the homes in Winnebago County, Wisconsin were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history means a contractor evaluating a central AC installation here is looking hard at whether the existing supply and return runs can move the volume of conditioned air a cooling system requires, and at whether the electrical service can carry the load of a new unit. Those are the two questions the installation turns on, and the answer to each one comes from what is already inside the house.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms, ductwork and an air handler in the attic space, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet, where it connects to the home's supply and return air.

The refrigerant lines run between the outdoor and indoor units, and the thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the air temperature and tells the system when to run. A condensate drain line also gets routed from the indoor coil to carry away the moisture it pulls from the air.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what goes where in your specific home.
