A contractor sizing up a central AC repair in Winnebago County has to separate two things: what the weather has asked of the system over the years, and what age or poor maintenance account for on their own. 96 severe weather events were recorded in Winnebago County, Wisconsin between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a real part of what every system here has been running against, and components like capacitors and contactors do accumulate wear from it. But the weather load alone does not tell a contractor which part failed or why. A compressor that gave out after years of service in this county still needs an inspection to rule out low refrigerant, dirty coils, or a failed starting component before the bill is written.

Unfinished basement or crawl space with exposed wooden floor joists, insulated flexible and metal ductwork, a concrete block wall, a coiled black corrugated pipe, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Ductwork in a house built before central air was standard often went in as an afterthought and has sat largely untouched since. Half the homes in Winnebago County, Wisconsin were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a system fails and a contractor opens it up, what they find in the duct runs and around the air handler reflects that history: debris, deteriorated seals, or flex connections that were improvised rather than engineered. The repair on the unit itself may be straightforward. What surrounds it frequently is not.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms with ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines, on a white background.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it carries the compressor and condenser coil. These are where a contractor looks first. A failed compressor, a refrigerant leak at the coil, or a seized condenser fan motor will each stop the system from shedding heat, and the symptoms at the thermostat often look the same until a contractor gets to the source.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower motor. The evaporator coil sits in the airstream above the furnace or in a dedicated cabinet, and a frozen coil or a failing blower motor shows up there. The refrigerant lines running between the two units and the expansion valve that meters refrigerant into the indoor coil are also part of what a contractor traces when the system is underperforming.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to the specific equipment and configuration in your house.
